What it is
Oxytocin is the body's 'love hormone' — best known for driving social bonding, trust, and connection (it also triggers labor contractions and milk letdown). Made in the brain and released by the pituitary, it's studied off-label for social and calming effects. Its one FDA-approved use is the synthetic form (Pitocin), a hospital-only injection for labor and post-birth bleeding — so it isn't a self-administered peptide, and the bonding and anxiety uses aren't backed by that approval.
What the research found
Oxytocin is FDA-approved for obstetric use, given by IV infusion or injection under medical supervision, and studied off-label for social bonding and anxiety. The approved label and its clinical data describe only the obstetric use; the social-bonding, anxiety, and intranasal uses that draw research-community interest are off-label and not characterized by the approved evidence. Because oxytocin is chemically close to the hormone vasopressin, large doses can cause water retention and, rarely, dangerous water intoxication.

Oxytocin is a nine-amino-acid posterior-pituitary hormone, FDA-approved in synthetic form as Pitocin for obstetric use. It is one of the most-studied peptide hormones in medicine on its labeled indication.
Mechanism. Oxytocin binds specific receptors on uterine myometrium; receptor concentration rises through pregnancy and peaks in early labor, which is why the same dose produces very different responses depending on gestational timing. It promotes contraction by increasing intracellular Ca²⁺ (via myosin light-chain kinase). Because oxytocin and vasopressin (ADH) differ in only two of their eight ring/tail amino acids, oxytocin carries intrinsic pressor and antidiuretic activity that can appear at large doses — the basis for the water-intoxication hazard.
Clinical use (FDA-approved). Labor induction/augmentation where medically indicated (e.g., Rh problems, maternal diabetes, preeclampsia near term, premature membrane rupture), control of postpartum bleeding, and as an adjunct in incomplete/inevitable abortion. It is explicitly not indicated for *elective* labor induction. Administration is by IV infusion pump with continuous fetal/uterine monitoring, or IM postpartum — a supervised hospital procedure.
Pharmacokinetics. Rapid: a plasma half-life of about 1–6 minutes, cleared largely by kidney and liver, with only small amounts excreted unchanged. The fast clearance is why labor infusions can be stopped abruptly and the effect wanes quickly.
Research-community / off-label context. Outside obstetrics, oxytocin draws interest for social-bonding, anxiolytic, and related effects, frequently via intranasal routes. None of that is FDA-approved or characterized by the Pitocin label, intranasal PK and CNS penetration differ entirely from the IV/IM obstetric data, and this entry does not provide a protocol for it. The honest framing: oxytocin is an FDA-approved obstetric drug; the broader uses are investigational and outside this entry's evidence base.
